Judith Singletary, PhD, is a senior health communications strategist with more than 25 years of social marketing and communications experience, largely with health and health-related social issues that affect underserved communities and communities of color. As a medical sociologist specializing in social determinants of health and social inequalities, she has extensive experience on strategic communications, partnership development, stakeholder outreach, and market research on some of the nation’s most pressing issues, including: diabetes, access to care, health insurance and other social determinants of health; oral health; cardiovascular disease; infant mortality; and developmental disabilities.
Dr. Singletary has been primarily responsible for managing large scale social marketing efforts which include communications, marketing, research, and outreach. She utilizes her training in medical sociology and, to this end, remains committed to developing evidence-based outreach efforts that not only educate consumers, but empowers them to make positive health care decisions and motivates them to engaging in healthy behaviors. She is experienced in the development and implementation of strategic marketing and public relations initiatives for a variety of healthcare and health-related organizations, including government agencies, associations, hospitals, healthcare systems and physician practice management organizations. Dr. Singletary has a strong background in community relations and coalition building, to include development of private and public sector partnerships, community-based collaborations and other strategic alliances. She is skilled in the development of cohesive advertising campaign materials, as well as informational and collateral pieces to support marketing, education, sales, fundraising and public relations objectives.
Furthermore, Dr. Singletary is experienced in conducting quantitative and qualitative research for the development of mass media, social marketing and public education campaigns, including written surveys, in-depth interviews, mall intercepts, dyads and focus groups. She is also skilled in focus group facilitation, as well as the development of related research instruments, such as questionnaires, discussion guides and screeners.
Dr. Singletary received her Ph.D. in Medical Sociology and Social Inequality from Howard University and her Master’s Degree in Journalism from University of Maryland, College Park. She has worked on numerous projects targted at improving the health behaviors of underserved populations, including but not limited to: outreach and education to vulnerable Medicare and Medicaid patients, and various other stakeholder groups concerning diabetes self-management, adult immunizations and cardiovascular disease as a Senior Consultant on CMS Quality Improvement Organiztions; conducting qualitative research with key constituencies around such issues as pediatric oral health literacy and utilization of services for the Children’s National Medical Center’s renowned Child Health Advocacy Institute; and reaching underserved communities and communities of color for federal, state and local governments for For the USDA’s grantee Cultural Competency initiative through Campbell & Company Communications.
