“When You Have a Voice, You Have Power!”
The 2018 Girl Code Youth Conference offered pre-teen and teenage girls of the Greater Washington metropolitan area an opportunity to learn about self-love, empowerment, and protecting themselves. It introduced them to concepts that will equip them to make informed and healthy decisions. The conference also focused on educating them about issues that are important to young people growing up today. It attracted girls and young women from varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, created an opportunity for them to bond. They left with an understanding of respect for one another and for themselves.

My thoughts about Girl Code:
Hi, my name is Nashrah Quadri, and I have been an intern at HCDI/ICCI for the past two summers. Girl Code is an event that my co-worker, Arooj Ahmad, created to teach young women how to love themselves how to be bouje on a budget, self-care tips, and tricks, etc. We created this conference so young women like myself can be educated on things they may not know and to make them comfortable in their skin. Last year girl code had an amazing turnout. Each speaker talked about a lot of interesting topics that affect us all as young women; many of the girls that attended the Girl Code event came from all-around from the DMV area. There were a lot of fun activities and a cool DJ too. The feedback was great, and we hope it’s even better next year.

My thoughts about Girl Code:
Girl Code was such an amazing event to plan. I truly enjoyed spending my time with Jacquelyn and Ms. Emily putting Girl Code together knowing that it would benefit young girls. I ended up learning a lot during this process about self-esteem, empowering women, and so much more. Despite the fact that we were separated for a couple of months, everything fell into place the day of the event. We got so much help from our volunteers, our guest speakers were phenomenal, and we all efficiently worked together to make it the best event it could possibly be. The topics we discussed were relevant to the girls and there was so much participation throughout the day. The girls definitely got to speak their mind and enjoy themselves. The event was a complete success and it was truly an honor to be a part of it.
